The O.E.A. Scholarship Fund was started during the school year of 1929-30 by our predecessor, the Owosso Teachers Club. It was the idea of Miss Kate Corlett. It was decided to give $100 a year with a maximum of four years for any one person. One third of the total amount received was to be paid back to the fund by the student as soon as possible after he finished his schooling. The qualifications were based on character, ability, and need. The committee in charge consisted of the principal of the high school, the dean of girls, and a grade school principal to be appointed by the president of the club each year. One dollar per teacher was to be used each year. At first each building was responsible for its quota of money. Some raised the money by putting on a supper or by card parties or other projects. Later it was decided to have the money taken out of their salaries by the administrative office.
Through the decades, the Scholarship has continued to benefit Owosso High School graduates. In 2016, the OEA lost its president, Mary Harper, to a brief battle with cancer. At that time, the Scholarship was renamed to honor her memory.
